Standing Nude, Gesture VR drawing using passthrough

I got a new VR program – Gesture VR  that uses 3d scans of models to allow you to practice gestural life drawing in VR (while wearing a headset). Like all digital programs (I might make Art Rage an exception so there will be others) the mark making is pretty rigid and very hard to get variety into. I have done some small drawings in the virtual studio, shown below, but the big virtue of it for me was that I could use it with my Quest 2 with pass through active so that I could see the model in the space while I drew on paper in the studio. The above drawing is my first effort. Charcoal on paper with a bit of white chalk and around ninety minutes.

After finishing(?) ‘Lemniscate Wave cc’ I got an email from the UKSPF Art Grant regarding moderation. I got a small grant from them to produce some drawings with an attached AR element as a downloadable app for smart phones.

Communications of any kind always break into the flow of work so the ‘Redfilm’ and developments of the lemniscates are on the back burner for a while as I resolve the timetable for the ‘Doncaster Platonics’ [UKSPF Art Grant].

The empty studio

I took the plunge and moved into a new studio away from the house. It’s expensive but more professional!

I oved into the space above on Tuesday 2nd May.

On Wednesday 3rd May I got a roll of dpc plastic and covered the floor.

Moving in Day

On Friday 5th May I moved all the stuff down to the studio in a van and started to assemble the installation that will sit in the middle of the space.

A view of the studio with the installation

We’ve had a run of bank holidays, what with Charlie’s hat and so on, so I didn’t get back to the studio until Tuesday 9th May when I finished assembling the installation and a seperate space for storage.

First Coat of Paint

On Thursday the 11th I managed to give all the structures a first coat of paint and set up the computer and VR headset. I needed to do some gardening on Wednesday as it wasn’t raining.

Platonics

I continued to work on the platonics app after the last post and whilst I’m not completely pleased with it I decided to put it onto the play store as a test. It’s remarkably easy and took a couple of days total. It’s a fairly involved process though so it’s worth making a list and preparing your materials. it is particularly worth creating a set of screen shots and getting your publicity materials in order before you start. It’s on as a test in that I’m not publicising it other than on here.

platonics_timaeus is now on the play store.

Be a bit Pirate AR

Be a bit Pirate AR

A short while ago I made myself an AR animation to go wih my business card, the post Gardens Project 14, says a bit more about it and I’ve wanted to do more since.

One of the arms of my ever growing octopus of projects is looking at platonic solids and developing drawings and sculptures around these forms. The work then becomes about itself rather than it’s subject; materials, textures, colours and other qulaities of surface and form become more central to the piece. So I started to play around with building AR accompaniments to drawings and ultimately models of the figures.

This first piece uses a photograph as the source but was originally worked off the 3d model. Part of my thinking is around the idea of imperfect platonics, as if they were crude representations made as simply and quickly as possible. Both of these are recorded from my android phone.

The next stage of the project will involve extended the range of models and the nature of the the solids in relation to the classical elements. The example above is my first attempt with the tetrahedron and fire.

Studio View March

The model for the tetrahedron was made from hand made paper deliberately because it presents difficulties, it is hard to finish evenly because the paper is buckled. The thickness, about 2.5 mm, would appear to offer a good join but the twists and turns of the surface work against it.

I used this view of the model as a target for the vuforia file and the apps will tie in quite easily to the object itself.

I’ve obviously continued to work on other things as time passes, writing applications for grants for example, and I’ve also worked on some other drawing.

This drawing arose as a another tentacle of the mathematical symbols research I’m still engaged with.
