Artist’s Statement.
The Balby Carr area of Doncaster is a typical ‘edge’ land, an unkempt area
reclaimed by nature from the industrial past and now infused with an air of
abandonment. It is one of those places where you can find a supermarket
trolley next to an empty five metre cable drum. There is not much that is
pretty here. It is also where I regularly walk my dogs.
The paintings begin with the memory of these walks and dictate their own
outcomes in much the same manner as nature determines the character of
this particular landscape. The landscape cannot escape being beautiful
regardless of the abuse, just as the painting will arise despite the
degradations of my repeated attempts to define it.
